Variable Star Sampler
Again, working with my favorite Variable Star block, I was able to take advantage of the star centers to feature even more quilt block favorites. The result is a nice "sampling" of a number of wonderful blocks.

Ohio Traditions
The Ohio Star block is one of those old traditional quilt blocks that is always fun to work with. For this design, I decided to do a color-play with four of the blocks and finished it off with a double border. It's a simple design that makes a strong graphic statement.

Star Dance
I always love to find different ways to work with my favorite star block, the Variable Star. For this design, I arranged the stars in a circle. When it was done, I was struck by how much movement there seemed to be in the design, almost like the stars were "dancing" around the center.

Trip Around the World
This quilt design, with its wonderful array of colors, has been a quilter's favorite for decades. I decided I had to give it a try myself. Choosing the fabrics was the funnest part of the whole process. Like many of the strong geometric quilt designs, you never know what it will look like until it's all done. Timeless Trio

Lone Star
This design features a Lone Star block also known as the Star of Bethlehem, Bethlehem Star and Texas Star. It is one of the oldest and most recognizable blocks in quilt history and one that has always fascinated me. This year I decided to give it a try myself and I'm very pleased with the outcome. Oh My Stars
Just when I thought I couldn't come up with another design using the Variable Star block, this one popped into my head and onto my design tablet. Flying Pinwheels
I'm always looking through quilt books, calendars, catalogs, etc. for inspiration from traditional quilt blocks. The Pinwheel block is one of the most fun blocks to do, with many different designs from which to choose. I designed this quilt using the Pinwheel block derived from the Flying Geese block , thus the name Flying Pinwheels. I think it's my favorite Pinwheel block now.

Flying Pinwheel

Old School Traditions
The traditional Schoolhouse quilt block has always been one of my favorite old blocks. I am always attracted to antique quilts featuring this block, especially those done in reds and whites. While looking through some of my favorite quilt books, I was inspired to design my own version of a traditional Schoolhouse quilt. My version includes a little Variable Star embedded in the center of the quilt and a star button added to each Schoolhouse. I think it pays humble homage to a timeless tradition.

Farmer's Daughters
The Farmer's Daughter block has long been one of my favorites. It's hard to say just exactly how this block got its name, but it sure seems to strike a chord with many of us girls born and raised in the country. I think it nicely accentuates the block design and results in a lively and colorful little quilt.

Grandmother's Fans
The Grandmother's Fan block, with its curved piecing, presents a technical challenge to some of us quilters, but the result is well worth the effort. An endless number of beautiful color arrangements can be created. With this design, I decided to feature just one favorite color arrangement and repeat it six times. As I had hoped, it nicely captured the wonder and nostalgia of this fun traditional quilt block.

Dancing Star
Stars, in any configuration, top my favorite quilt block list. This star design takes advantage of the three dimensional effect achieved by using different color values. It consists of two offset Friendship Stars done in different fabrics. The result is a spinning or 'dancing' movement which, to me, seems magical.
